Happiness in company travel usually takes a lower back seat. San Francisco founder Julie McCormack can at least choose a travel shotgun.
She specializes in yr-old agency, Worldwide Escapes, China, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and Cambodia for quick adventure travel events, with a few days off for B-travelers. Starting from 99 599, all of these programs are inclusive, with spherical-travel transfers from Hong Kong, Bangkok, Manila, or Beijing (though she is bendy).
McCormack came up with the concept four years after visiting the Far East for business. “At first, it had to be the top to have work that sent me to these kind of cool places,” she said. “But it turned out to be a real drag because I couldn’t see it in any way.” She takes vacation on the weekends, but vacations are usually controversial to plot, especially knowing quickly. She met others who felt the same way: “Most human beings spend their days sitting around their motels watching TV.”
The Worldwide Escape Web site online (www.Wwescapes.Com; 800 / 958-8524) lists an assortment of five-day journeys. They can be custom designed, from clean to difficult; An experience can never be canceled because of too few human beings.
“It amazed me,” says Hewlett Packard’s consultant Linda Orandi, who volunteered with 2 guides on a 2-day Phuket Sea Canoe and mountain biking excursion. “It was strange at the beginning, but the guides were very good – I wouldn’t say I lost interest.”
Orandi and others who went on the Guilin Escape journey in South China described Kevin Tinto, McCarmack’s journey as more offbeat than physically challenging. Tinto, a senior associate of Ski Advertising Enterprise (who also booked a Vietnam trip with worldwide escapes), liked the fact that Gillin, a neighbor girl tour operator during the McCormack installation, had nothing to do with the authorities. “Most tours in China are very regimented; you feel very controlled,” Tinto said. “Guilin is not like that in any case. We thought we were looking at a real China. The government doesn’t have to help you.”
Although she was initially looking to expand her Asian services, McCormack was not counting on the rest of the world. She’s about to go to South America – it’s for a commercial company, but she says it’s satisfying.
